Domain Name

  • What exactly is a domain name?
To access your website, web users type your web address (www.mycompany.com) into a browser. The part of your name that falls to the right of the first dot, in this case, mycompany.com, is your domain name. The domain name consists of your domain (mycompany) plus an extension (.com). The domain is tied to all aspects of your site, including your email addresses. So, in this example, your website address is www.mycompany.com, your domain name is mycompany.com, and you might have an email address in the form of something@domainname (e.g., sales@mycompany.com)

  • Can I register my domain name through Gressing?
Yes. You can use our online form to register.

  • Is there a benefit to registering my domain through Gressing?
Yes. When you register your domain name through Gressing, Gressing often creates a custom 'Coming Soon' page (C2SP) on your behalf and hosts it for free. This allows you to begin marketing your brand, company, products, and services immediately.

  • What is a C2SP and do I have to agree to have one?
A C2SP is an exclusive offering provided by Gressing. When available, this Custom Coming Soon Page (C2SP) is designed and hosted by Gressing when you register your domain name through us. It is completely optional and completely free.

  • When, in the business process, should I register my domain name?
Gressing suggest registering your domain name as soon as you have a name for your business. This provides two major advantages: (1) you secure the name and (2) with Gressing's C2SP option, you can begin marketing long before your website is complete.

  • Once I register a domain name, is it mine forever?
Domain names are registered for a finite period of time. For new businesses, Gressing suggests registering for a three-year period. This allows you to concentrate on growing the business without the added burden of worrying about domain name expiration within the first three years. Since market data indicates that it takes about three years to establish new businesses, again, this period just makes sense.

  • If I register my domain name through Gressing, am I obligated to host my site with Gressing or allow Gressing to develop my site?
No. You can chose to host or build your site anyplace you like.

Website Hosting

  • What exactly is web hosting?
Web hosting means that your website resides in a place (on a web server) where it is accessible to users when they enter your web address into a web browser.

  • How can I determine which hosting account is right for me?
Whether you host with Gressing or another company, you should always consider the size and demands of your site and compare that with the various hosting plans available. Select the hosting plan that meets your needs today and will allow growth. Most hosting companies allow you to upgrade or downgrade if your needs change. For more detailed information, visit:
  • Can I transfer my site from my hosting company to Gressing?
Yes. To ensure a smooth transition, however, you'll want to speak with one of our STAR (Senior Technical Account Representative) Team members before you initiate the process.

  • Can I transfer my site from Gressing to a new hosting company?
Yes. To ensure a smooth transition, however, you'll want to speak with one of our STAR (Senior Technical Account Representative) Team members before you initiate the process.

  • Can I easily upgrade/downgrade my account?
Yes. Most account upgrades/downgrades are done within the same day as the request.

  • When I sign up for a Gressing hosting account, am I bound by contract for a specified amount of time?
Most of the Gressing plans are monthly, so there is no obligation beyond the month. Occasionally, Gressing may run promotions that require a commitment for a specified time.

  • How do I access my hosting repository to maintain my site?
There are several ways to access your repository. You can use your Gressing Control Panel (CPanel), if it is included with your account type, to manage your site files; you can use an FTP Client to upload/download files; or you can use a built-in utility with an HTML authoring program such as Dreamweaver or FrontPage.

Note: If the answer above does not make sense to you, then you may want to consider allowing a web developer manage and maintain your site.

Site Development

  • Do I have to write the content for my site?
Only if you want to! Gressing maintains a research and writing staff. A Gressing member can meet with you (in person or via telephone) to obtain information about your products and services. This information, along with any literature you have can provide the fodder for the initial site content. You are, however, responsible for ensuring that the content is accurate and complete. Gressing's writers will incorporate your changes and update the content accordingly.

  • How does Gressing determine pricing for site development?
Gressing maintains a price list for standard sites and site types. Once you have shared your vision with a Gressing developer, a final price (flat fee) will be quoted. Factors that influence pricing include site size, complexity, information format, etc.

  • How long does it take for Gressing to create a website?
The time it takes for a site to go from concept to deployment varies widely. Small, relatively simple pages or sites can be done in a few days or a couple of weeks. The timeline also assumes that you will review and respond promptly. Larger sites may take weeks or months. If you are working within a timeframe or need the site on the web by a certain date, let us know; we'll work with you to help you meet your goal.

  • Can I create and administer my own website?
Yes. Several of our hosting accounts are appropriate for developers or businesses that have an IT Staff. You can use any HTML or development tool you like. Gressing's Control Panel allows you to perform many admin tasks and even install additional components like chat rooms, guest books, email forms, etc.

  • Can Gressing teach me how to create a website?
Occasionally Gressing teaches courses on web development. As a rule, however, we do not provide one-on-one training for web development. Our site contains a DIY section that provides links to books, software, articles, a forum, and other resources that you may find helpful.

  • Does Gressing provide tools and resources for Do-it-Yourselfers?
Several hosting accounts are geared toward developers or do-it-yourselfers. These accounts are equipped with scripts, software, programming language support, site builder tools, and additional utilities like chat, guest book, forums, and form generators. Additionally, the DIY section of Gressing's site provides links and information relative to do-it-yourselfers. Please note, a link or reference from our site does not indicate endorsement or partnership unless explicitly stated.
